Security Alert: Peru, Demonstrations, Train Service Suspension, and Consular Agency Operations January 13

Demonstration Alert:  U.S. Embassy Lima, Peru   

Location:  Cusco, Peru 

Event:  Demonstrations, Train Service Suspension, and Consular Agency Operations (January 13, 2023)  

Rail services between Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Hidroelectrica have been suspended until further notice.  Travelers remaining in Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu village should contact local authorities (hotel front desks can assist) regarding available options for departure, which may involve a combination of rail, walking, and bus travel.  Peruvian National Police expect large protests to take place in Cusco throughout the day.  Demonstrations and roadblocks continue to affect security and movement in Cusco and the Sacred Valley.  Do not approach demonstrations or attempt to drive around roadblocks.  U.S. citizens should avoid crowds and follow the instructions of local authorities.    

   

The Consular Agency in Cusco has cancelled all scheduled appointments for January 13 but remains responsive to public inquiry and emergency needs.  For emergency services in Cusco, please reach out via email at CuscoACS@state.gov or call the U.S. Embassy in Lima at +51-1-618-2000.  

The following airports remain closed:   

 

  • Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) 
  • Juliaca, Inca Manco Capac International Airport (JUL)  
  • Andahuaylas Airport (ANS)  
  • Jaen Airport (JAE)

Actions to Take: 

  • Avoid ​crowds. 
  • Avoid demonstrations. 
  • Do not interfere with or attempt to circumvent roadblocks. 
  • Monitor local media for updates. 
  • Follow traffic police instructions. 
  • Comply with instructions from the Peruvian National Police and local authorities. 
  • Register in STEP (https://step.state.gov/) to receive alerts and messaging from the U.S. Embassy in Lima.
