Security alert: Violent attacks in Rio Grande do Norte 

 

Event:  

On March 14, 2023, the state of Rio Grande do Norte experienced a second consecutive night of violence with attacks by criminals on public buildings, stores, cars, buses, and bank branches, among other locations in at least 15 cities. The state government suspended services in basic health units, public schools and universities suspended classes, and some companies shifted employees to telework on Wednesday, March15th.  While security guidance remains the same for U.S. citizens, they should pay attention  to the situation and monitor local news sources for additional information.  If the situation worsens or further restrictions become necessary, the U.S. Consulate General in Recife will send additional alerts.

Demonstrations and strikes are common in urban areas, and may occur unexpectedly, disrupting transportation, and may escalate into violence.
