LARC Webinar: Ongoing Economic and Political Challenges in the Southern Cone of South America (June 7)

OSAC’s Latin America Regional Committee invites all OSAC members to participate in a VIRTUAL discussion on Wednesday, June 7 from 2:00-3:00 PM ET that will provide a political and economic analysis of South America. 

Brian Winter of Americas Quarterly will provide expert assessment of the political challenges in South America and Raúl Vera Bogado of RAISE – Finance, Strategy and Corporate Governance will discuss current economic issues facing South America with specific focus on Paraguay.  Participants will be able to submit questions prior to the call through registration and ask questions live via Zoom's Q&A feature. Please note that this event will not be recorded.

Speaker Biographies 

Raul Vera Bogado 

Mr Raúl Vera Bogado is an economist with extensive experience in corporate and international finance, management of financial companies, and economic analysis. He completed specializations in public economic policies, international economics, strategic management, innovation, and corporate governance. 

He was President of the Central Bank of Paraguay, Minister of Industry and Commerce, Ambassador of Paraguay to the European Union, General Manager and President of the Regional Bank. Among other functions, he was Director of Bancard (payment processing company), Member of the Advisory Board for Latin America of the Dutch Development Bank (FMO), Deputy Director for Institutional Services in Latin America and the Caribbean at The Louis Berger Group, and consulted on projects financed by the Inter-American Development Bank and the United Nations Development Program. 

He graduated from the National University of Asunción and MSc. in Economic Policies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has a Certification in Corporate Governance from INSEAD Business School (France), and executive training courses at the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania, USA), Institute of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank , Federal Reserve Bank in New York, and INCAE Business School programs. 

 

Brian Winter 

Brian Winter is the editor-in-chief of Americas Quarterly and one of Latin America’s most influential political analysts, with more than 20 years following the region’s ups and downs. He lived in Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico as a correspondent for Reuters before taking on his current role in New York, where he is also the vice president of policy for Americas Society/Council of the Americas. He has been called “the best foreign expert on Brazil of this moment” by GloboNews. Brian is the author of several books including Why Soccer Matters, a New York Times bestseller he wrote with the Brazilian soccer legend Pelé; The Accidental President of Brazil, co-authored with President Fernando Henrique Cardoso; and Long After Midnight, a memoir about trying (and failing) to learn to tango in Argentina. He is a regular contributor to television and radio, the host of the Americas Quarterly Podcast, and a prolific barbecuer and chef. Proficient in Spanish and Portuguese, Brian speaks frequently about Latin America’s past, present, and future to investors and general-interest audiences.
